We have just been talking to the most amazing Sculptor!

Andrian Melka came into The Acorn Gallery this morning and had a browse around, he was asking about the Alexander Millar Angel Bronze Sculpture that we have in The Oak Room and said he is a sculptor and so we got to talking...

He works from commissions on pieces for individuals and private estates and often his sculptures are larger than life - literally! He works from a complete block of stone or marble and works it through to completion, often taking six months or more to finish a single piece...

I asked if he had any pictures of his work and he showed us to his website... Wow! This man is good - seriously good!

The work he shows under the heading of 'Commissioned Statues' is just beautiful... they look like they have been borrowed from Ancient Greece!

The statue of Medici Venus is shown during its installation at the top of a 12m column... Andrian explains how he watched it being hoisted 20m into the air before being lowered down into place...

As we scroll through the images... Atlas... Bacchus... Diana... the quality of his work is superb... His statue of Neptune is just staggering! Truly breathtaking -the smooth marble carefully sculpted into a six-pack that you wanna get your hands on for all the wrong reasons!

We move onto a massive public project that he undertook in Santa Barbara in California! They had a very large sculpture outside the Court House entitled 'Spirit of the Ocean' but it was crumbling and irreparable due to its age.. Andrian was commissioned to re-make it in its entirety, exactly as the original had been! So keen were they to have him above anyone else that they didn't even mind paying the £6k Visa fee for him to go over there to work!

We have discussed having a piece of his work here at The Acorn although probably not something as large that! He has a beautiful 'Hands' sculpture which we are hoping to show... and possibly some other pieces too... So watch this space... :)

Exciting! NEW Bob Dylan 'Train Tracks' Pre-Order NOW!

This week we see another exciting release from music legend Bob Dylan! What is different about this is that only one image has been chosen!

'Train Tracks' is the most requested and most sought after Bob Dylan image of all time and it's limited production has caused a stir in previous years. This year the 'Train Tracks' image is being released in a set of four stunning colours. Each piece is also available separately.

Interest in the collection has been massive with many collectors looking to finally add this iconic image to their collection and fans who have been patiently waiting for this piece are looking to purchase before it sells out!

Our Door is Always Open...

Our door is always open... well sometimes it's closed but figuratively speaking it IS always open :)

We always welcome people into the gallery and whether the weather be rain or shine we hope the door does not provide a barrier...

In Summer the door always sits open allowing fresh air and warm sunshine to stream in...

In Winter we tend to keep the door closed, not because we fear the fresh air (Bridlington Beach in January makes for a bracing walk!) but because we are increasingly aware of the environmental impact of allowing heat energy to escape...

Of course an open door is an open invitation to you to walk in and have a look around... the closed door could be seen as a barrier however we like to think that by keeping the door closed we are keeping the gallery at a comfortable temperature to give you a place of solace and warmth when the weather is less than hospitable...

So next time you are passing, whether faced with rain or shine, call in, say 'hi' and give yourself some time...

Let me start the first blog of 2012 by saying that Diane & I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and a big THANKYOU for your continued support.

I have been rather lazy and I have failed to update the blog with the top sellers for November and December... I blame that chap in the red suit and white beard for distracting me!!

Yet more congratulations to Paul for the second month in a row being at the top and also on becoming a grandfather, a priviledge indeed!! It's also nice to see Bob Barker, a Yorkshire artist, at last get into the top three, he has had a fantastic year and we expect much more from Bob in 2012!!

Hi Diane, I am releasing a series of small paintings on paper. They are a more affordable version of the shoe paintings, and are limited edition original oil paintings (only 30 of each). One full set has already been sold! I like their feel, it looks cute and fun so I’m planning on doing a collection of them!

I hope that the Shueya is flirting enough with your customers… otherwise I might have to have a word with her ;-)

They sounds absolutely stunning and yes please I would like the full set to hang alongside and support Shueya and her entourage... after all, a girl can never have too many shoes ;) Do please dispatch at your earliest convenience and I shall wait with baited breath... :)

I should tell you that Shueya is much admired but hasn't yet seen anyone she's fancies enough to go home with... ;)

Recent History and Todays Tomorrows...

Here at The Acorn we like to let you know who's hot and it's come to our attention that we've slipped a little in our reporting! Something to do with having Keith Proctor here last weekend I shouldn't wonder :)

Right then... top sellers for the last two months... Well its hard to ignore the presence of Bob Dylan along with top three constant companions Peter Smith and Alexander Millar... no surprises there you might say but it is nice to see Sarah-Jane Szikora creeping in there too with a couple of old favourites tickling the fancy of a very impressed admirer :)

Hamish Blakely has made a triumphant statement this month too with the sale of three superb original pieces to an offshore collector...

We have also seen fantastic interest in the watercolour work of Mike Jackson (also known for his Quirky Houses) with several originals being sold in recent weeks!

Maureen Crofts is also getting alot of interest for her carefully detailed pencil work.

Lucky her, it would have been so lovely to meet you in person, hopefully we’ll get opportunities for this in the future. I do have to apologise in advance for the imposed game of “pass the parcel” that John and you will have to endure to get to the painting, there are a few layers! I am sending 2 parcels, 1 for the Shueya and 1 for the 3 B’s. It’s ready when you are!

Burning Curiosity...

One fine day back in June we came across a piece of work which absolutely blew us away... It was like staring at the sun, the brightness of its white hot centre was so real that you could almost feel the heat...

Stephen Simpson is the man behind this exciting new creation... and these pieces really are just that... created from visions of time and space, taken from the burning heat of exploding stars and the powerful intensity of the sun...

We contacted Stephen through Twitter (@stephenpsimpson) and asked him how he captures this magic on canvas!

Stephen explained how he first adds layers of modelling paste onto the canvas, building up a fantastic texture and helping him to see just how this piece is going to turn out... he adds oil paint glazes for colour and finishes off with a layer of resin which he heats up with a blow torch... a brave and often nerve-wracking time but he assures us that as long as he keeps it moving then it simply makes the resin completely transparent and gets rid of any bubbles... the canvas does get very hot but doesn't (often!) set on fire!

When working he follows his instinct and lets the piece lead him... he admits he is often surprised at the final result!

My Mum Fancies Him...

This afternoon a small girl wandered into the gallery with parents in tow and began searching the walls as though looking for something she had seen on a previous visit...

John asked her if she was indeed looking for something particular and she replied quite matter of factly that she was looking for Doctor Who...

Smiling, John knew straight away what she wanted to see and went upstairs to bring down an original painting of David Tennant by Black Country artist Chris Oxenbury...

As he carefully carried it down the stairs the girl pointed at the canvas and proudly announced 'my Mum fancies him!' Mum at this point came around the corner and stopped short as she saw the almost lifesize image looking back at her...

'Oh I say, he is rather good isn't he?' she said...

Sadly unable, though not unwilling, to take him home she reluctantly left him with us for the right person to come along... and in the meantime, she said with a glint in her eye, she would click on our website everyday to look at him... :)

We had a visit from a local lady today asking if we knew anyone who could look at an old oil painting she has which is in need of some cleaning and restoration work.

We have come across some very interesting pieces by a Spanish artist called Luis Frutos... We find them quite intriguing and wondered what you thought?

'There' Original

Born 1947 in Madrid , Luis has been a working artist for over twenty five years. He lives and paints mainly from his home studio in Altea (Alicante), as well as spending a portion of each year at his second home in Norfolk in the U.K.

The past decade has seen him produce new work for over twenty well received exhibitions in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Germany as well as three in Spain (Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid), two is the U.S. (Miami, New York) and two here in the U.K (London, Norfolk).

Luis describes his work as being "touched by magic realism", and these distinctive images do seem to blend elements of fantasy and reality. We have not seen any of his work in the flesh but we understand that they are richly textured, expressive and highly energetic.

Wow! I can't believe it's been so long since we blogged! Did you miss us? Lol :)

We've had a busy few weeks and it's a shame we haven't found time to tell you about them... until now! Gosh, where do we start?

Following the success of the exclusive 'Icon Collection' from Paul Horton we are surprised and delighted to tell you that there is still some availability on three of the images! I know, we can't believe it either! It seems the summer holidays have got the better of you and maybe you think that the collection had sold out before you could bagsy a piece for yourself? The Icon Collection - Don't Blink...!

On Saturday Paul Horton was here at the Acorn gallery to unveil his stunning 'Icon Collection'. The five new releases are very special as there are only 25 of each one available!

Each image was shrouded in black and unveiled piece by piece... The audience were enthralled as Paul told the story behind each character and each iconic scene...

Champagne corks popped and nibbles were nibbled as Paul chatted to the collectors who had come along to share this proud day...
One lady had proudly brought in her pride and joy...two of the Noahs Ark pieces which she had bought in previous years with the intention of eventually passing them on to her two sons... She is now the proud owner of a third Noahs Ark 'Man of God' which she is delighted with!

Part way through the day we were told by Washington Green that The 'Icon Collection' is now fully sold out and the only images still available are those in galleries.

At the time of writing we have just three images remaining and the details are as follows:

What a Night... Fantastic Food and Moodful Music...

We usually try to talk about art on the blog but we've had a fabulous night out tonight and just had to share it with you!

First of all we went to Judsons Bar just a few doors away from The Acorn Gallery, meeting friends for a meal before attending a gig at The Arts Centre. Judsons Bar is located in the building formerly known as The Square but this new business is a world away from the old one! The newly converted building is spacious and airy with large sofas and a stylish contemporary setting. It is uncluttered and very relaxing!

The menu is simple but promises well put-together meals and we were not disappointed! I ordered the braised beef with mushrooms, shallots and horseradish mash and with a red wine sauce... It was the best plate of food I have had in a long time! The beef was beautifully cooked and so tender that it just fell apart... the rest of the plate was full of flavour
and the delicious sauce complemented it all!

John had the slow cooked shoulder of pork with black pudding and was very impressed - he swears it was the tastiest black pudding he has ever had... and he is somewhat of an expert! Our friends were equally impressed with their choices!!

Puddings - what can I say? OMG! Amazing! The chocolate fondant with caramalized oranges and ice cream was simply fabulous, however John states very strongly that the sticky toffee pudding covered in toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream is to die for!! (I think we will always differ on this point!)

At £97.50 for 2 rounds of drinks, 4 main courses and 4 deserts with coffees, it is a little pricey but we all agreed it was worth every penny! The quality of the food was outstanding and the surroundings and the attentive staff made for an overall first class service. We recommend everyone to try out Judson's!!

From Judsons we went to The Arts Centre where we had tickets to see a young singer/songwriter called Sean Taylor. With reviews such as '''absolutely superb guitarist ... reminiscent of John Martyn' ' by BOB HARRIS Radio 2 and "Sean Taylor is the finest acoustic blues talent to appear in the UK for many a year...The eleven tracks on Calcutta Grove are a beautiful body of work … catch him before he goes stella" by LOVE MUSIC HATE RACISM we were intrigued to see this guy in action...

This nimble fingered guitar playing singer was totally awesome, with his unique voice keeping our attention throughout... he introduced each song with a few words about where and when he wrote it and proceeded to knock our socks off with his incredible ability on the guitar which often seemed like an extension of himself...

With his guitar and harmonica and singing many of his own words, it is no wonder that Sean Taylor has been compared with Bob Dylan... watch this guy - you will hear his name again!

So, Pocklington you did it again, great food and great entertainment! What a superb evening!!

'I Never Touched Him' by Peter Smith

Once upon a time there was a huge fan of Peter Smith... his name was John Wass. He loved to buy the prints and soon had quite a collection... Whenever Peter was due to do an appearance John and his wife Diane (also a huge fan) would attend to say 'hi' and have a chat about the latest releases!

One year Peter brought out a series of prints under the banner of 'Smithy's World Cup' and one of the prints was called 'I Never Touched Him'... The image was taken from a famous incident between David Beckham and the referee in an England vs. Argentina World Cup match .

John learned that he was the person being thought of for inspiration when Peter was painting the referee... with that larger than life character towering above the footballer...

Armed with that information John set about tracing the original to the print and finally managed to aquire it for his own collection!

This is the dedication on the reverse of Johns copy of the 'I Never Touched Him' print - showing the naming of the characters!

John is immensely proud of these two pieces and we both continue to be big fans of the work of Peter Smith!

With all the excitement surrounding 'The Bimps' Peter Smith is going to be a bigger name then ever so watch this space for news...

January is here and we have reviewed the stats for the past 12 months. We can now reveal that the top sellers for 2010 are as follows:-

Congratulations to Keith Proctor - not bad for the new kid on the block! Top spot in his first year!! It was a close run race however with only 4 sales between 1st & 2nd place and only 2 sales between 2nd & 3rd places!

Our overall Top Sellers (since we opened in December 2007) :-

3. Paul Horton

Peter Smith is still proving he has what it takes and we believe that he has lots more to follow! We are very excited about the 'Bimps' - new characters which Peter has shown us on his blog and on Facebook. We love them all, especially the dog and as soon as we know more about them then we will of course let you know!!

Not shown in the overall Top Sellers, but just biting on the heels of Paul Horton is Alexander Millar, who has a massive publicity push this year for his museum exhibition. This will be a fantastic show for Alex which will feature his famous Gadgies and Gals and rumours are afoot that he is planning a tour and a book! Watch this space for news...!

It looks like this year could be an interesting one and it will be very interesting to see if there are any changes in the overall Top Seller for 2011.

David Tennant is widely regarded as one of the best Doctor Who actors of recent years (some would say ever!).

Diane and John go to Copenhagen... (Bob Dylan 'The Brazil Collection')

Well the day dawned crisp and clear with blue skies and we were looking forward to our flight! We checked in at Manchester for our early flight and went to find breakfast...

All was calm and clear despite snow and freezing conditions, gritters were out on the runways and planes were taking off and landing at regular intervals... until it was time for us that is! A two hour delay (ironically caused by fog in Amsterdam that morning!) meant a little longer in the airport lounge than expected! Never mind... small price to pay and we hadn't flown for years so it was a treat simply being there... :-)

Eventually we boarded and the flight took off - what fun! We could see the ocean laid out far below us and the deep blue skies stretching away into the distance beyond the curve of the earth...

The flight was smooth and scenic and as we flew into Copenhagen we came in low over a forest of Christmas Trees... all thickly decorated with fresh white snow... beautiful!

So, we made a safe landing and quickly caught a taxi to our accommodation - a fabulous rooftop apartment decorated with a comfortable mix of boho chique and having a snow covered balcony... we'd step out later with our bare feet - just for the hell of it ;-)

We had planned to visit the National Gallery first thing the next morning and were amused by the still falling snow and its ever increasing depth on the balcony... would we even get there?

The bus-stop was only a short walk around the corner and we bought a ten-trip click-strip from the seven-eleven (do you like how we got the lingo there?)...

A standing-room only trip into town and we took a walk along the snow-lined streets glancing down the festive decorated walking-streets, resolving to explore those afterwards!

Soon the National Gallery came into sight, adorned with a huge banner advertising the work of Bob Dylan - he even got bigger billing than Picasso!!

The building was very grand and the entrance led into a huge open space with a magnificent high ceiling and which echoed with a revered silence... We carefully wiped our feet on the large mat and walked over to the desk, feeling guilty about the wet footprints we left as snow still dripped from our boots...

We bought our tickets at the desk and were told that we had to leave coats, cameras and bags in the cloakroom downstairs, so that's where we headed first...

Duly offloaded we followed the signs, huge banners hung from the ceilings and the balustrades... they were obviously very pleased to be housing the collection...

Upstairs along the marble lined hallways we found the double doors leading into the room where the paintings themselves hung... a custodian sat by the door nodded quietly in greeting as we went in...

The room itself was warm with a wooden floor and walls which curved away in waves... Wooden benches were placed along the middle for those who wished to sit and admire...

The paintings immediately catch the eye as being very colourful and varied and the first to catch my attention was entitled 'Bahia'. It shows an evening scene in a small town looking across a street from a high vantage point, maybe a window or balcony. The sky is midnight blue with a church outlined against it and the only characters shown are a streetsweeper, an old man with his walking stick and a scantily dressed woman in a doorway... a single car drives by... I love the deep blue and the dark browns and blacks in this piece and wonder if that really is a Christmas Tree in the pot on the corner of the street... it's vibrant green and yellow lights standing out in the darkness...

'Wagon Master' is an agricultural scene showing cattle pulling a hay cart and its honest 'rough and ready' hand has none of the old world charm of the likes of Constable... the honest true life style of Bob Dylan tells it just like it is!

There is a scene of workers hand-picking grapes in a vineyard, they have stopped work and stare at the viewer, almost as if you have interrupted them...

There are a few mafia-like paintings showing brawls and nightclub scenes... always leading the eye to a particular character where Dylan wants you to linger and ponder their situation...

There are huge wooden benners at intervals annotated with expressions from the man himself... words of wisdom about his life and his work...

Overall the collection is stunning and Bob Dylans honest, true to life, paint-it-as-you-see-it style gives every piece its own individual character, a feeling that doesn;t always leave you when you turn away...

The Brazil Collection is available to view at The National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen until the end of January... well worth the trip!

Bob Dylan - Copenhagen

Bob Dylan has recently completed some fabulous new paintings entitled 'Brazil'. These new images are only to be exhibited in Copenhagen, Denmark and will not be going on tour as previous exhibitions have done.

Diane & I have decided, in the interests of research, to visit the new exhibition and so the Acorn Gallery will be closed from Friday 26th November until Monday 29th November whilst we undertake this essential and fascinating mission...!

We have no idea whether any prints will be produced from this new work but we are looking forward to seeing the originals.

Copenhagen is a beautiful city and we are looking forward to seeing its stunning architecture and picturesque harbour... no doubt there will be a pavement cafe somewhere close to the museum so that we can partake of the local beverages and discuss what we have seen...

Proctormaniacs Rule!!

Saturday 13th November 2010 was a day we had been waiting for...

For a long time we had been watching the blog of a man who painted his son, Jack. The paintings were quite charming and showed a certain understanding of small boys and their delight in the big wide world...

We asked the man if we could take some of his paintings for display in The Acorn Gallery but he explained that he had been signed by a publisher and so we couldn't take anything... the publisher was Washington Green and the man was Keith Proctor...

In February 2010 when his work was published for the first time we were very excited and delighted to see it receive such a positive reaction! His pieces have sold consistently well since then and we were delighted to be offered one of only seven appearances he would be doing this year!

As the marketing was done the excitement was building and when the day dawned we had only to watch and wait... Keith arrived promptly with his wife, Deb, and of course Jack!

We had one of each image framed on the wall along with the three stunning originals, two of which had sold in advance of the day! The third had been reserved but became available again only to be sold to the first lady through the door that morning :-) She was delighted at her prompt attendance and good fortune - fate had a hand there we think :-)

That first sale paved the way and many more followed... print after print after print sold from off the wall (it's a good job we'd had the foresight to frame multiples of each image!).

Keith was chatting and laughing with the customers as he signed and dedicated his way through the backing boards, signing the odd invitation along the way...

The gallery went through stages of being packed to capacity and taking a breather, thankfully allowing us to catch up on wrapping and packing ready for those people who had gone off to explore Pocklington and were calling back later :-)

It's always nice to enhoy a glass of something bubbly whilst having a look at the artwork!

Keith was happy to pose for photographs with customers!

We believe that no piece left the gallery without a signed dedication on the back!

Jack was a complete star all day, chatting with people and signing his name on invitations... he even did a few pieces of artwork of his own, most notably this magnificent pirate ship...although they were all scereted away home with him at the end of the day - well apart from one, which he kindly left for our 'Priceless' gallery!

So, thankyou to Keith, Deb and Jack for joining us and thankyou to all of you who came along to join in with this phenomenon!!

We are sooo excited!!

As you know we are looking forward to welcoming Keith Proctor on Saturday 13th November between 12-3pm... but now we are delighted to announce that Keith will be bringing a very special person wth him...

JACK will be coming too :-)

Since Keith was launched in February 2010 he has taken the art world by storm and we are very lucky to secure an appearance as he will only be doing 7 appearances this year!!

The prints of these charming childhood scenes are totally engaging and the market for original oils is very keen! In fact the three pieces we have for this event sold in less than 12 hours!!

So come along and meet Keith and Jack in person! Come and chat about his inspirations and ask Jack what he thinks about being famous!!

Keith Proctor has consistently been in the top three for each month since he was launched here at the Acorn and shows no signs of slowing :-)

It was a forgone conclusion that Peter Smith would take top spot for September and October though as we always have a fabulous time when he is here and we are hoping for the same with Keith.

So, mark the date in your diary and come along and remember Keith, and maybe even Jack, will be signing anything bought on the day!

International Deliveries...

Box-building is always a matter for care and consideration and we take just as good care with the packing of anything but we worry just a little bit more when the parcel is going overseas!

The box we built today had to contain a framed canvas print and a mounted print and so had to be carefully constructed to keep them both in prime condition during travel - not that we're saying couriers are careless but accidents do happen and we'd rather be safe than sorry!

With double thickness corrugated cardboard front and back and thick wads of polystyrene all around we think that these items are extremely packed but just in case there is any doubt... we've plastered the outside with FRAGILE tape - just to remind the courier that what they are handling is precious!

So, how many miles will this parcel travel...?
Over two thousand miles because it is headed off to CYPRUS!

Wow! Peter Smith really knows how to pack them in!

Saturday 2nd October and we were expecting Peter here at The Acorn Gallery between 12-3pm so we busied ourselves with final preparations including collecting 100 cupcakes... :-)

We gave the gallery a last sweep through and dusted the prints... we laid out the glasses and put the champagne on ice...

Peter arrived early to check-in and say hi and so that he could pop into his favourite coffee house for a coffee and cake... Pocklington is fabulous for foodies ;-)

But fear not, he returned in plenty of time for his devoted public and they came in droves... Fans old and new and some who didn't even know him yet... They all came to see his work and hear his stories and to choose which piece or pieces they would have for themselves...

All of the images were much loved but slightly in the lead were Forget-Me-Not and Opposites Attract... The Lovers Sculpture is staggeringly beautiful and the quality is second to none...

With stories being told and heart strings pulled, emotion was high! One lady was almost in tears as Peter dedicated 'Baby on Board' for the child she carried within her...

Dedication after dedication followed and Peters pencil case really came into its own when he was presented with an Impossiphant from the recent Elephant Parade Charity Event. He touched it up superbly and we all watched with avid fascination!

And so the afternoon went on... chilled champagne, fresh orange or Bucks Fizz, cupcakes and caramels... Caramels? Where? Well maybe next time... ;-)

OMG its the end of the month and in 24hours we will have the fantastic Peter Smith in the gallery.!!

Peter is here to promote his fantastic new tour 'It's A Stripe Thing' and we can't wait!! The wall has been hung, the originals have arrived in time and look fantastic.

As I sit here typing this entry I am looking at the wall and thinking to myself what a fabulous collection and we have already started pre-selling!! There is no clear leader but we have three pieces tying for top spot. It's all very exciting :-)

We have ordered, from Becky Mackenzies in Pocklington, freshly made cupcakes... thinking back to 'I Eat Cake' and of course the one on the fabulous free print 'Keep Calm and Have A Cupcake'

We are so looking forward to having Peter and Jayne back with us again. Peter is on top of his game and it is an honour that he will be with us for the third year in a row.

Shop Local ...

Shop Local is a phrase which has been banded about for years, probably without a proper understanding of what it actually means!

The local economy depends on local support for the businesses who choose to set up in the area. Passing trade and the tourist pounds obviously make a valuable contribution but the lifeblood of a local business is the local people.

Now, as dramatic as that sounds, it can actually be used for illustration purposes: Money can be seen as the lifeblood of the community, flowing between the businesses, keeping them all pumping and supporting each other... keeping the Community alive!

Once money is spent outside the local economy then it never makes its way back, it seeps away like blood from a wound, slowing the pulse and potentially leading to the death of the local economy.

Now this black picture seems very dramatic but it is the chain of thought that goes through the minds of local businesses everywhere.

We look to support local economy whether it is here in Pocklington or away on Holiday in Scotland. We know that our choices will have a direct effect on the local community and it makes us feel good to know that we are doing all we can to support them.

Business in Pocklington has been tough this year however we are looking onwards and upwards to the Autumn Fair in early September where we will see all the latest work by your favourite artists!

We know you like to know everything as soon as we do so we'll be sure to get a newsletter out promptly telling you everything you need to know :-)

It won't be long before Peter Smith makes a welcome return to The Acorn Gallery! This will be Peters third visit here and although we will be sending out invitations nearer the time, we'd be delighted if you would pencil us in for Saturday 2nd October from 12-3pm :-)

At The Acorn Gallery we have been following this fantastic cause on Facebook and took a keener interest when we found out that Alexander Millar, Jeff Rowland, John D Wilson, Louise Dear, Paul Kenton and Peter Smith had been asked to take part.

WHAT?
The Elephant Parade was the largest outdoor art exhibition, displaying 258 life sized baby elephant sculptures, in locations all over the city of London. Created to support leading charity Elephant Family, each elephant is a unique piece of art hand painted by renowned artists and designers.

WHY?
With an estimated audience of 25 million, the campaign aimed to raise over £1 million for the endangered Asian elephant. It was an innovative fundraising and awareness campaign that shone a multi-coloured spotlight on the urgent crisis faced by the endangered Asian elephant. Elephant Parade’s mission is to become the world’s largest financial support organisation for elephants saving the Asian elephant from extinction in the wild.

AUCTION
After going on display in London, a select number of elephants were auctioned by Sothebys at a glittering event on Wednesday 30 June. The remainder were auctioned online and in a public event on Saturday 3rd July in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

Sunflowers by Bob Dylan was one of the most popular images from the 2009 Drawn Blank Series and a different portrayal of the image has been included in this years Drawn Blank release!

In keeping with the 'Drawn Blank' ideal, the use of colour to change the feel of the piece has proven that the popularity of the image remains constant!

We are one of a few galleries to still have this image available as a single item (ie, not part of a set) and so don't miss out if this is one of your favourites!

Wow, its June already, what a busy month this is going to be!!

Diane sets off on Friday 11th June from York to cycle 250 miles to Amsterdam and back for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

She is hoping to help raise £30,000! Diane is not cycling this distance on her own, she is cycling with another 59 ladies and will be back in York on Tuesday 15th June, very tired but very pleased with herself.

This year the Bob Dylan Drawn Blank Series comprises of 21 images and we started the day with the framed standard edition graphics on the wall - stunning!

The two portfolio sets and the four medium graphics were beautifully laid out in their presentation wallets on a large table especially brought in for the occasion! Atop the folders was a pair of pristine white cotton gloves, for showing off the work and protecting the Hannemuhle paper.

We arrived in plenty of time for the specified opening time of 10am and we nipped out to get a large bag of ice before sealing ourselves in! Down came the shutters and the champagne went on ice...

We busied ourselves with final preparations and watched nervously as the hour approached... Before long a familiar face appeared at the window and we saw a customer waiting by the door, soon joined by another... we had a queue!

Even with the phenomenal success of the 2008 and 2009 collections we had never had a queue! Excitement grew... At 10am on the dot we opened the door and our queue made their way inside - yes, two customers officially make a queue :-)

Both had both come with images in mind but were keen to see the entire collection and we happily donned white gloves and proceeded to show off the work. Very soon we had made our first two sales :-)

The morning progressed steadily and we had a constant stream of people coming in to admire the work, a few more sales followed and by lunchtime we were very pleased with the day so far...!

Outside the sunshine was getting stronger and the heat was intensifying.... fewer people were coming in and we joked that they were all staying home for the weather!

The things is ... we were right! Pocklington became a ghost town and the usually bustling street was half empty! A sight rarely seen in this busy market town!

For the rest of the afternoon we had only a few visitors and as a result we still have a superb selection of work to look though!! This is a first because in previous years we have sold out so fast that of you have been disappointed - so now you have your chance!

The work will remain in the gallery only for as long as it takes to sell - so step up and make your choice!

By the way... Happy Birthday, Mr Dylan, for Monday :-)

I Want to Ride my Bicycle...

Diane and I spent Sunday on our bikes taking part in the Great Selby Bike ride, cycling a total of 50.4 miles!!

March Madness!!

Spring has arrived and the weather has turned better, however March madness has set in at The Acorn Gallery!!

Diane has decided to do the Amsterdam bike trip again! It is a 250 miles round trip cycle ride from York to Amsterdam and back again raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care which Diane successfully completed in June of last year helping to raise more than £28,000 for the charity!!

So training has started in ernest!! At least I mean for me as I have agreed to train alongside Diane to give her moral support... but so far I am the only one doing the training as I have insisted that we get out at 6am every morning and unfortunately Diane is not a morning person!

Good job I have the dogs for company however Sophie is not too keen for such an early start but Samson is eager enough for the both of them!!

It's A Man Thing!

Today was a good day!

It is always an uncertain time between having sent out the invitations, hanging the work and opening on the day of the event! Is the gallery clean and tidy? Have we remembered everything? Is the bubbly suitably chillled? (All the important questions!).

Well we needn't have worried! The first people came in almost as soon as we opened the door and we made a sale straight away! Jumping Jack was the first off the starting block!

A steady stream of people allowed us to spend quality time with almost everyone who came in and we are delighted to report that Jack the Lad has stolen several hearts today!

'It's A Man Thing' created quite a stir and we have had to order extra copies to fulfil demand! 'Bzzz' and 'Jumping Jack' were next in the popularity stakes! The oil on display was already sold but we've taken notes of interest from a few new people as a result of seeing it! Keith - I hope your brushes are clean and ready to go?

We had a few nicely timed lulls during the day - just enough to catch our breath and boil the kettle!

Everyone has been very impressed and we have had lovely comments. Sales have come both from those who came specifically and also from people who just popped in as they were passing! We have made sales across four counties and had visitors from all over - even a lady who had just flown in from L.A.!

Without a doubt we can say that today was a resounding success! Fifteen sales by the end of the day and that tells a story all of its own!

Many months ago whilst surfing the web, we came across an artist whose work had an instant appeal... there was something about the innocence of the boy in the paintings... a charm which captured and held you... we followed the blog notes and picture posts with keen interest, finally approaching the artist to see if he would be happy for us to show some of his work... the artists name was Keith Proctor!

Tomorrow we are so proud to show you 'Jack the Lad' the first exhibition of work from Keith Proctor, published by Washington Green.

The collection comprises of three stunning canvases with four beautiful paper editions. Each image carries the figure of Jack, the completely charming young boy whose antics are sure to coax a smile from even the hardest of hearts.. he is a boy for all seasons with a charm for all ages and we hope his adventures will amuse us for years to come...

Well at last the images have been released from Keith Proctors debut collection 'Jack the Lad'! Follow the link in the title (above) to see his charming studies of childhood...

Interest in this new work is building and we have had more requests than usual for original work by this artist! Original oils are very scarce and even pencil sketches are hard to get hold of but we will have one of each on the wall on the day of the exhibition! If you have an interest in these original pieces then we recommend that you let us know as soon as possible!

Also released this week are the images for the fantastic new Spring Collections by all your favoutite artists!

One piece which is long-awaited is 'I eat cake' by Peter Smith - those of you who read Peters Blog or who follow him on Facebook, will be well aware of the excitement created by this subject!

Another piece we'd like to mention is the Charity piece painted jointly by Alexander Millar and Jeff Rowland. These two are great friends and when Washington Green asked them to work together they were delighted. Jeff, who needs regular dialysis, was keen to try and use the venture as a fundraising exercise for charity and Alex happily agreed.

The image which they created is called 'Singing in the Rain' and features Alexander Millars classic gadgie with his umbrella, splashing his way happily down the road in the pouring rain!

Artist royalties from the sales of this print will be donated to the Renal Ward at Birmingham Childrens Hospital and Washington Green are delighted to match this sum which means a sizeable donation if both editions sell out!!

The print is available on paper for £375 or on canvas at £425 and looks stunning!! (For now the website image for both options shows the paper version as no canvas image has been provided but it will be updated as soon as we have stock in the gallery.) One of each will be displayed for you to admire!

For a while now we have been watching with interest the work of an artist whose subject and style have captured our hearts!

Upon approaching said artist to ask if he would be interested in showing some pieces with us we were told that he had just signed with a publisher and so would be unable to do so.

Happily the publisher is Washington Green and so we are now delighted to introduce you to Keith Proctor!

Keiths portrayal of childhood innocence and freedom is truly uplifting and has a timeless appeal that will span generations.

We are proud to announce that we will be launching an exhibition of prints and original work entitled 'Jack the Lad'. Invitations will be going out soon so if you are interested in attending then please contact us to be added to the guest list.

Its February and we can finally waive goodbye to the January blues!! We even had sunshine this week already!

January was a fairly quiet month but we can still let you know the top artists were:-

A three way tie for first spot and a two way tie for the second spot!! Congratulations to all the artists!!

We have alot to fit into February - it's going to be a busy month!! Starting with our sons birthday on Friday - he will be 14!!! (I think he sleeps in a growbag as I swear he is getting bigger every day!!)

Its is also the Spring Fair event held by Washington Green to launch the latest work by all of their top artists! This is the first chance for us to see what they have been up to since their last release in September. We'll be able to chat to them first hand and get the run down on the background ideas for their new work.

We are hoping to be good on Sunday and not spend to much but we say this at every one of these events and end up buying lots of great pieces to display in the gallery.

Diane and I are very excited to see that an artist who we have had our eye on for a while will be launched at this event! When we approached him about taking his work at The Acorn he advised us that he had just signed with a major art publishers! Fortunately for us Washington Green have snapped him up - and we think you will too!! Look out for news of a LAUNCH EXHIBITION to be held here soon!!

Of course February is the month of St. Valentine and The Acorn Gallery has prepared a few suggestions in our 'Valentine's Day' Gallery (14th February just in case you couldn't remember the date!!) AND we are offering a FREE box of chocolates when you spend £100 or more in store with one lucky customer winning a bottle of bubbly too!!

As if all of that isn't enough... we are also really pleased to be showcasing the work of new artist Phil George, a North East painter who's characters, Norman and Reggie, reflect the ups and downs of post recession Britain. Well it took two years to get him here but Paul Hortons first visit to The Acorn has been a huge success!

Paul's latest collection of nine stunning limited edition prints and a beautifully proportioned sculpture, is entitled 'Love is Life' and the interest in this work has been incredible!

We could tell by the number of advance orders that we could be in for a busy evening but you surprised and delighted us by keeping us busy all night!

Paul arrived early at 4.30pm and turned down a cuppa, eager to get a head start on the advance-order dedications we had waiting for him but we soon had our first customer arrive to pick up his copy of 'When The Circus Comes To Town' which Paul duly dedicated... and so it began...

There was a steady stream of people coming in, happy to stay and enjoy a glass of bubbly whilst listening to the tales behind the work. Paul was kept busy throughout the night, answering questions, signing dedications and generally being the star of the show!

Paul has been 'on tour' since September and we were his 33rd appearance! Many galleries have already sold out of some images and he knows already that some of the remaining pieces will not last for his few remaining appearances!

Eventually about 7.45pm we managed to put the kettle on and make him a cuppa!! A couple of times we had enough of a breather to look around a share a grin but the rest of the night was just buzzing! To have so many people in at once, chatting, comparing and admiring his work was amazing - the atmosphere was great!

Some of you knew exactly what you wanted and some of you waited to chat with Paul before making your choice.

Several of you were left disappointed at the lack of availability on the piece entitled 'Love is Life'. This is the image which gave its name to the tour and it has been incredibly popular - so much so that we had sold out of it last month and many galleries were already sold out before us!

We have it on good authority that another seaside piece will be coming at some point so do register your interest with us now if you want advance notice of this.

Paul told us that he enjoyed his visit to the gallery immensly and would love to come back if we want him - you can guess our answer! Paul you are welcome back anytime :-)

The Acorn Gallery is celebrating its 2nd birthday today!! There are those who doubted that we would survive but it is with credit to the superb work that we sell and due also to you, our fantastic loyal customers.

Diane and I would just like to say THANK YOU for your support and to help us celebrate our birthday we have Paul Horton appearing at the gallery on the 10th December between 5-8pm to discuss his latest releases from his 'Love Is Life' Tour.

We will be holding a raffle on the night to win a signed limited edition print by Paul Horton - there will also be a runners up prize!

We will have champagne and nibbles so come on down and join in the celebrations! It will be a good night and Paul will be happy to dedicate any pieces purchased!!

Diane Makes Me Proud:-)

Well Saturday 21st arrived and for the first time in a long while I didn't have to be up to open the gallery as Diane had made me close for the day as it was her Triple Whammy Adrenaline Experience at Magna, Rotherham!

We had to get Diane checked in by 2.30pm ready to start at 3pm and so we all jumped in the car and headed off to Rotherham and arrived an hour earlier than we needed to!

I have to say 'The Abyss' is big!! It is high and very dark inside with large video screens and music playing with the odd body flying through the air as people throw themselves off a gantry 150 feet above us!!!

We stood for a few minutes, watching and then returned to check-in. The queue wasn't huge but it did seem to take ages! At this point I was berated by Emily our daughter wanting to know what I was thinking when I purchased the voucher for the afternoons events!!!

We eventually got to the signing in desk and Diane signed away her right to sue them if anything went wrong! We were then directed back inside and told to head for the zip wire first!!

The kids and I armed with cameras followed Diane and watched her get strapped into the harness for the zip wire. The kids were offered the chance to have a go but they said no as it was her day!

The zip wire was 250 feet long and stretched away into the darkness. The kids and I had trouble making out Diane in the darkness and we almost missed catching her on the camera as she came whizzing down and past us to the landing area!!

Diane thought it was fab and not scarey and told the kids they should do it! Next it was the abseil... This time with gloves to protect her hands on the rope, she was pointed in the direction of a staircase, a steel tread staircase made up of many flights of stairs!

The abseil was 150 feet free fall no wall to walk down just Diane, the rope and 150 feet of darkness!!

So, back to the harness area for a re-fit with the adrenaline pumping through her, before the power fan! Diane was strapped up again and once more pointed in the direction of the stairs!! It's a good job the power fan was last as this made us all nervous!!

All I got was this photo above as Diane came hurtling 150 feet towards the ground!! She was busy screaming but I didn't know if it was fear or excitement!!

As you can see from the photo above she had an amazing time and the kids and I are so proud of her :-)

Diane said she loved it... But the adrenaline has gone! What's next I ask myself?

I cannot believe we are already into November!! Where did October go?

October was a busy month with Peter Smiths appearance and we are hoping that November will continue at the same pace :-)

This is not likely to be repeated and so I need to be there to capture this crazy moment!!

'Twas the best of days...

11.20am on the morning of the BIG DAY! Peter Smith had agreed to an exclusive visit at the Acorn Gallery! Back by popular demand! The invitations and the press releases had all been sent, the fabulous new work adorned the carefully hung walls... so where was everyone?

We'd had a couple of people in, looking around and chatting, there'd been a gentleman with his little girl, busy on the Saturday kids clubs runaround, keen to pop back but couldn't be sure... and not a sign of anyone else!

Pocklington was quiet, not many souls about, although at least we knew Peter and Jayne had arrived because they'd popped in to say 'hi' before going next door to The Deli for a coffee. (They have great coffee at The Deli!).

Let's just say John and I were getting a tad nervous, looking round at the beautifully spick and span gallery, carefully dusted, hoovered and mopped and with plates and bowls of carefully chosen nibbles located at suitable intervals!

Peter and Jayne arrived, suitably refreshed after their journey, they had made good time and the traffic was good! We welcomed them with open arms and then it began!

A steady trickle of savvy collectors came through the door, keen to get here early for anything special! For one very special couple they were suitably rewarded for being so prompt! Following their wedding just one week ago, this very lucky couple came along to choose a gift from their wedding guests!

They were able to say 'yes' to two fantastic brand new pencil sketches made available to The Acorn Gallery at the very last minute on Friday!

Champagne flowed and the people just kept coming! Sometimes in two's and sometimes they just poured in! The gallery got pretty full at times and we were kept busy not just chatting and topping up glasses... but selling too! Peters latest work proved incredibly popular with 'Hug Me' and 'Cuddle Me' taking an early lead! 'For The One I Love' caught up quick and 'Sofa Loafers' and 'Together We Make A Family' made a good stand too!

The gallery got very full indeed - so full that I just didn't get chance to take any photos until after it quietened down!

You think this is busy? This wasn't the busiest!!

Peter was fantastic - he spent good quality time with everyone who wanted him and his stories were told over and over again!

John and I were kept on our toes with sale after sale. Peter was signing and dedicating left, right and centre!

Good job he brought a good selection of markers with him - they were put to very good use!

Here are just a few of the lucky people whose chosen images were remarqued on the day!

Two fantastic originals found a home as a result of todays event too - here are the proud owners of 'All You Need Is Love' who came over to Pocklington especially to meet Peter and collect their brand new piece!

Sales came fast and furious and we even had a queue at one point - many thanks to those who waited so patiently :-)

About 2pm we had a lull for 5 minutes - just long enough to catch our breath and bring down some fresh glasses!

We loved it! It is great to see so many people happily chatting and enjoying the work on display! I'm sure the sunshine and the champagne helped but everyone was in good mood and the gallery was buzzing!

Finally, long after the 3pm finish time had passed, Peter and Jayne were able to take their leave. They had seen and spoken with a significant number of collectors! It is always nice to meet up again with regular customers and collectors but it's lovely to meet new people too! There had been plenty of both that day!

Last night Diane & I closed the gallery a bit earlier than normal as we were going up to Gateshead to The Sage building to support Kevin Day one of our artists who was exhibiting at The Gateshead Art Fair 2009.

The Sage is an amazing place to look at from the outside. Unfortunately by the time we got there it was too dark to take any photos!!

Once inside the building it was full of art and people. Free drinks were available on arrival however we did not participate instead we elbowed our way through the crowds to search for Kevin.

We eventually found him upstairs on one of the balcony wings and as you can see from the photo below he had a good crowd standing and looking at his new work!!

We managed to grab Kevin & Nicki for a few words and Kevin said that he had already sold 4 pieces and that there was lots of positive comments and great feedback.

Diane & I then had a look at the new work and have pencilled in about half a dozen that we would like to see in the Acorn Gallery if Kevin doesn't sell them at the fair!!

After saying our goodbyes we had a wander round and found the following sculpture:-

These sculptures were made from scrap metal and were amazing to look at. The detail on them was outstanding. The company who made these are called Metalic Creations and we were reliably informed by Tony that they are hoping to do a sculpture of the STIG from Top Gear and also hopefully create sculptures of athletes for the 2012 Olympics!!

As we were heading towards the exit we bumped into Alexander Millar who lives nearby and decided to pop in and see what his former apprentice Kevin Day is up to!!

We had a good chat and left him to speak to other people who were waiting. As we left Alex we spotted Jeff Rowland so stopped and had a chat with Jeff. Jeff is currently unwell and it was nice to see him up and about, however he is not yet up to full strength to get back to the easel so we will be waiting a while for any new work! Take it easy Jeff!

Diane and I also managed to speak to Phil George who is an artist we are keen to showcase in the gallery and whose work we have been watching for a while. We will let you know if anything develops on that front.

Well what can I say? What a fantastic night, hob-nobbing with the top artists from Washington Green, seeing Kevin so busy with lots of people keen to get hold of his superb work and having the chance to see so much art on all levels!!!

Well so much for September? Where did it go? I swear the days are just flying by!

Congratulations to Alex, as included in these stats is the sale of a fantastic original!! Numbers were very close but it will be interesting to see how that changes this month!

So, it's October already and appropriately enough we have a stunning new original entitled 'Tangled (October)' to show you!

Lawrie Williamson is the artist and we have a really good feeling about this guy! This piece is very impressive and if you have chance you really should come in for a look! We have a couple of prints in the same style too!

Now that it is October we are only 10 days away from Peter Smiths exclusive appearance! His new images are really causing a stir and the advance interest has really been something!

We have even sold TWO originals in the space of a week so you can tell that he is just RED HOT just now!

Do remember that this appearance is not part of a tour and is especially for us! You all made him feel so very welcome last year that he is genuinely looking forward to coming back :-)

September Already!!

Well, we are back from our holiday and I have to say it was fab. The drive down with our caravan on the back was fine and I have said I would do it again!!

September is here and Diane and I are looking forward to going to the ICC event hosted by Washington Green on the 6th September which also happens to be my birthday! What a way to spend your birthday... hob-nobbing with the artists and having the chance to see all the fab new product firsthand!!

We're hoping to get the chance to catch up with Alexander Millar, Peter Smith, Paul Horton, Caroline Shotton, Jeff Rowland... ooh the list goes on! It's a great chance to see what they'be been up to and what they're planning for the year ahead!

Don't worry - we will update you all with as much as we can when we get back!!

On Saturday 12th September we have The Tour Of Britain Cycle Race coming through Pocklington so we are expecting large crowds in town that day! The atmosphere will be great and I am sure all the eaterys will be busy!!

August is upon on us which means our annual holiday is less than a week away!! We will be closed from the 16th-24th August and re-open on the 25th at 9.30am.

We are heading to sunny Cornwall for sea, sand and relaxation!! However we are not stopping in a static caravan this year we have decided to take our tourer with us!!

I must be mad as it is a long way to take it and it will be the furthest I have towed with it and I am not looking forward to the drive!!

Meanwhile back in the gallery...

Dylan 2009!!

Friday 24th July - Diane & I stayed later than usual in order to move the gallery around and hang the Bob Dylan signed graphics! We got stuck in with great gusto, taking down framed pieces for storage before hanging and unveiling the new Dylans!

Saturday 25th July - Diane & I arrived at the gallery early and shut ourselves in, we even put the shutters down! We still had bits and pieces of paperwork to do in readiness for the launch. At precisely 10am we put the shutter up, hoping to see at least a few people waiting to come in but the street seemed no busier than usual.

By 10.30am however we were well underway with enquiries starting to come in via email and the telephone! People calling into the gallery were keen to discuss this latest collection and compare it to the debut pieces from 2008 - their verdict? Most people agreed that this is an even stronger collection than last year!

We did manage a cuppa about midday - something we didn't get at all last year!

Over the day we had fans of all ages coming in to see and many had been with him 'man and boy'! Before we knew it it was 4pm and the gallery had another quiet spell so we took the chance again to put the kettle on!

By 5.30pm on launch day we had sold a total of 12 images, with sales as far away as the USA! Our decison to be in on the 2009 Dylan launch had paid off! Sales for the day were fantastic!

So, now we have only four Dylan pieces left and we think that even they will be soon gone! Anyone wanting to be a part of this journey needs to get on board fast!

Diane & I would just like to say a massive 'THANKYOU!' to all those people who came along and especially to those who bought!

Will there be any more Dylan prints in the future - we hope so because there will be alot of disappointed people out there if not!!

A bridge too far...?

Bob Barker is known for his fabulous warm palettes and his combination of light and dark that brings out the very best in your imagination!

The gallery was sparkling almost as much as the chilled champagne! A stunning selection of Bobs prints were adorning the wall, including two fabulous originals entitled 'Going Steady' and 'Lost in Memories'.

Just as we checked our watches a cheery face looked in and there he was, smiling and nodding hello - the man himself!

With his easel under his arm and managing with paints and canvas he calmly walked in and started setting up his easel, there must be a knack to it - it looked a little tricky!

It wasn't long before he was set up and ready but it was a while before he started painting ... well, people do like to talk and Bob's a very interesting man :-)

He had brought along a canvas which he had already made a start on, with a black background and with the cloud and buildings already begun. So when he laid out his palette and started to paint we were keen to see where he went next...

As he painted Bob chatted along and answered questions, happy to explain what he was doing and the techniques he was using.

We stared in awe as the reflections on the water took on a light and a movement of their own, as the moon dazzled and shone in its aura - is there such a thing as a Moonbow?

A discussion started - should there be a bridge? It did seem to need something on that left side ... a bridge would seem to hit the spot! And so it was ... out came the palette knife and sure enough a bridge loomed from the darkness and reached out across the water, its lights sparkling in the stillness of the night...

It was amazing to watch the painting grow, people came in from the street to watch (and to drink chilled champagne!) the atmosphere was great!

And so the only remaining task is to name this stunning painting - does it take its name from the calm and the stillness of the night? Or from the thriving city rising into the night sky...? Or for the music and laughter behind those waterfront lights?

Who knows? You decide!

It 'Ain't Half Hot Mum!!

It's been a hot one today as I'm sure you know but we seemed to especially feel it in the gallery as we've had a very busy day!

Today we have moved the walls and hung a superb selection of Bob Barker prints and original paintings in readiness for his PAINTING LIVE session on SATURDAY!! That's THIS SATURDAY 4th JULY 2009 between 12-3pm - champagne will be on ice so come on down :-)

Diane and I had a helper today! Our daughter Emily came along to offer a hand. She has now finished school and is awaiting her exam results and so we 'encouraged' her to come along and help get the gallery ready. I have to say she did good but she did moan!!

It really has been too hot today to be having a changeover but needs must. We have therefore swept the floor, dusted everything (you'd never believe the dust that gathers simply from having the door open!!). We've moved the walls and hung nine FANTASTIC pieces!!

The one, single drawback to all of this activity is that there has been absolutely no air circulation at all! We have had the door open, all the windows open and even a fan blowing today to try and get some air moving ... it all failed miserably but we survived!

Emily's payment for her days work was a large waffle cornet with two scoops of mint-choc-chip and caramel ice-cream from The Deli. Bargain price for a days labour I thought!

After putting Emily in a bear hug I managed to get a quick lick before I was shooed away and told by Diane to leave Emily and the ice-cream alone!! According to Emily it was fab!!!

Anyway, moving on ... I can now update you with the top sellers for June. They are as follows:-

Amsterdame09 Last Day!!

The ferry landed at 8am in Hull and once they had cleared customs they were off!! The three groups kept to the original route up to Brantingham where they stopped for an hour and had a great write up on the pubs website. Check out the article headed Daffodil Girls..at www.thetritoninn.com under the news link.

From there they headed to Howden through some pretty villages. After a very nice pub lunch they headed towards Knedlington and on to Barmby On The Marsh, cycling along the river bank. Whilst on the river bank Diane asked Craz, leader of Team Chaos ( this was the name they gave themselves!!), if she could ring our daughter Emily, as they were going to go through Hemingbrough. Craz said yes so Diane rang ahead and announced that Team Chaos would be riding through the village! The whole team stopped outside the church and Emily managed to get a hug from Diane and also gave hugs to Lisa, Jayne & Lianne.

Diane told me later on that the whole team was in tears when hugs were being handed out and that after she received her hug it spurred her on and she flew the rest of the way!!

At 6pm 54 ladies could be heard singing 'Here Come The Girls' and as they rounded the corner in to the car park they were honking their horns, waving their arms and shouting 'Woop Woop!' at the tops of their voices! Immediately there were party poppers going off, champagne corks being popped and lots of cheering and clapping. You should have been there it was amazing!!

For the next hour there were lots of photos and hugs and tears as the girls greeted family and friends but also as they said goodbye to each other - who knows if they will all meet up next year for Amsterdame10??

Diane has had an amazing trip and is still on a high. What an achievement 250 miles in 5 days! A lot of hard work by all the ladies but special thanks must go to the ride guides, Craz, Gaz, Matt, Ginny, Michelle and Sian and to Mitch & Simon from Red Courier who provided the support vehicles and who according to Craz were fantastic!!

Amsterdame09 Day 3

Spoke to Diane who advises that the ride back from Amsterdam to Rotterdam was fine and that they made good time as they were at the ferry terminal by 6pm however she did have a bit of a tumble but is ok.

Spoke to Diane later on around 10pm after she had managed to get a shower and some food. Diane says the whole team is in high spirits and that a few of the ladies are now feeling the aches and pains. I wonder if the bottles of champagne had anything to do with the high spirits!! Diane says they are all looking forward to docking in Hull and the final leg back to York.

Amsterdame09 Day 2

Just a quick update, spoke to Diane on Saturday evening at around 6.45pm she advises that they had docked at Rotterdam around 8am but had only just arrived due to delays getting off the ferry and through passport control!!

Diane advises that they had covered 75 miles today and that she was feeling fine. They stopped on route and had a fantastic pack up thanks to P & O Ferries. Lunch was at the waters edge to a lake where they sat and watched people water sking, sailing and having a swim!!

Diane informs me that Holland is so cycle friendly it is fantastic and I get the feeling that if our kids were not in the middle of exams etc we could be moving!!!

Sunday was a rest day so Diane has had a cruise on one of the canals and sat and relaxed had a meal out and took a walk round Amsterdam taking lots and lots of photos!!

Today Monday is the return cycle back to Rotterdam. I will update you all after I have spoken to Diane tonight.

Amsterdame09 Day 1

Up at 6am, had a shower then breakfast loaded the car with the bike and luggage and set off for McArthur Glen arriving bang on 8am.

We parked up and off loaded Dianes bike and luggage. Fitted her panniers and handlebar bag to the bike and Diane had a quick ride round the car park to make sure everything was working ok.

We then had many photo opportunities before Gary & Richard the lead ride guides called all the ladies together and give them a safety briefing, more photos were taken and then the ladies were told to go to the toilet and make sure they filled their water bottles up!!

After lots of hugs and kisses from family and friends the ladies were all lined up at the start line. The ladies have been split into three groups and to avoid any crashes at the start they were set off at 5 minute intervals.

I am able to track the ride and noticed after about an hour and a half Dianes group had stopped. Diane informed me that one of the ladies had got a puncture and so they were busy fixing it and taking the chance to take on board some water!!

The group arrived in Market Weighton for lunch at 12.30pm, had a tea break at 3.30pm at Brantingham and arrived on the outskirts of Hull at 5.30pm. They eventually arrived at the ferry terminal around 6.30pm

They boarded the ferry around 7.15pm and set sail at 9pm. Diane did say that the ride was hard due to a few hills and the pace was quicker than they were expecting but she is feeling good, she has no aches and no sore bits!!

Diane and all the ladies are feeling good and relaxed and they are even collecting donations on the way!!

Peter Smiths latest sculpture 'My First Love' was released in February but has only just started to arrive in galleries - but he was well worth waiting for!

He sits perfectly with any of Peters prints and with the edition being limited to only 150 worldwide - well you can guess he won't be around for long!

On 12th June Diane is setting off on a bike ride to Amsterdam with 53 other ladies to raise much needed funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care! They are hoping to raise £30,000!!

The Acorn Gallery are pleased to announce a competition in support of their efforts and the prize is a signed limited edition print by Paul Kenton called Early Light Amsterdam - see picture below:-

Diane is now in training for the 250 mile round cycle trip to Amsterdam which sets off on the 12th June 2009 in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Tonights The Night!!

May 16th has arrived and tonight is the night when Diane along with 14,999 other ladies will all be walking 26.2 miles in a decorated bra for breast cancer.

The training is over and Diane has packed her rucksack with all the essentials she will need to complete this epic task!!

The train tickets have been collected. She will be leaving Selby at 3.45pm arriving at Kings Cross, London at around 5.45pm. Once she arrives she has to get over to Hyde Park locate Playtex City and make sure she is registered before 8.30pm.

Then it is time to relax have something to eat and get her self mentally ready. At about 10pm she will get changed into her walking gear and her decorated bra and then have a warm up session, a light massage and do some stretching exercises. At the stroke of midnight she will be off!!

Diane is hoping to complete the 26.2 miles in around 7 hours and my fingers are crossed that everything goes well for her.

Well April is over and we roll into May. April was a good month and Alexander Millars appearance got us off to a fabulous start. Yesterday we had a nice surprise two of Washington Greens artists popped in to say hello and stopped for a coffee and a sandwich. We chatted about lots of thing inc Dianes Moonwalk and her Amsterdam trips. It was a very nice day and a great end to the month!!

As you may know I am doing two big sponsored events this year as part of my 40th Birthday Year of Challenges! Although I have done some of my personal challenges already the Playtex Moonwalk is the first of two big sponsored events!

It is a walk of 26.2 miles through the heart of London starting in Hyde Park at midnight on Saturday 16th May - hence the name (nothing to do with walking backwards!).

My training is ongoing and last Thursday afternoon I had arranged to do a training walk with my friend, Val. I do mid-week walks which are only 3-4 miles and a once-a-week long-distance walk which increases in duration as the mileage increases...

We are averaging a walking speed of 4mph so the 14 mile walk we had planned for this particular afternoon was due to take us 3.5hours ... trouble was that we hadn't planned for it to rain!

The walk was good to start with, although pace was a little slower than anticipated we got into a rhythm and set off.

About half-way through the walk it started to spot with rain but this was soon replaced by a definite shower and then a much heavier rain which certainly qualified as a downpour!

We had no choice but to soldier on ... cars passed us and looked at us as though we were totally mad!

We strode on with our clothing soaked right through, our joggers were so wet they were plastered to our legs and it made the walk hard going! The rain was stinging our faces and the wind was howling round our soaking wet clothes - good job we were active otherwise it would have been seriously cold!

As we followed our chosen route the rain eventually slowed and stopped. For three miles we had walked in the rain, about 50 minutes! But now the sun was trying to shine and our joggers, although still moulded to the shape of our legs, even started to dry a little!

We walked the final stretch of the walk, alongside the main road, turning away from the big trucks who thundered past with a strong side-draught and showered us in muddy water from the roadside!

Eventually we arrived back at mine where my thoughtful boy found us each a big bath sheet and handed us each a steaming hot drink!

We removed our squelching wet trainers and sat down wrapped in our towels and felt the heat from our drinks as it ran down inside us...

Energy was distinctly lacking and so I was very thankful that I'd had the forethought to buy a pack of pink iced doughnuts that morning - they absolutely hit the spot and gave us the boost we needed!

Training is fabulous on hot sunny days but we needed a day like this one to remind us that it is possible that it may rain for the big event and it was good that we have had the experience - but it also made us add 'spare set of clothes' to our list of stuff to take ... just in case :-)

What A Day!!

It all began with Alex advising us that his train would be arriving in York at 11.25 and could we pick him up!! Yes we said and then panic set in, still lots to do and I had to leave Diane and Emily to put the final touches to the gallery as I dashed into York to the train station. After being told to move three times by the police and assorted traffic wardens I heaved a sigh of relief when I saw Alex emerge from the train station looking calm and relaxed.

I managed to get through the busy traffic and get Alex to the gallery by 12.10pm where some collectors were already eagerly waiting to chat with him.

Alex entertained questions about his ideas and inspirations and was kept busy all day chatting and dedicating prints and purchases!

We were delighted to welcome a gentleman who travelled all the way from Glasgow to purchase Whee - a very rare piece - which Alex was happy to dedicate for a special ladys birthday!

We have had superb interest in the new original oils and everyone could identify with the small red trike! Childhood stories were recounted and it is obvious that this painting brings out the smile in all of us!

By 3.30pm Alex had to leave as he had further comittments and so I dropped him back in York. Alex thanked me for a lovely day and said that he would love to be invited back someday!

I really can't believe it's been so long since the last entry! (You're probably all thinking the same!).

Well we're getting ready for Alexander Millar who is due to appear at the gallery today - in fact he should be on his way now as John has gone to collect him from York Station.

The sun is out, the glasses are polished and the champagne is sparkling... the gallery has been dusted to within an inch of its life and there is an outstanding display of Alex's work on the wall!

There are all of his latest pieces along with some classics, including the highly sought after 'Whee' and nestled among them are three superb Original Oil paintings! 'Rhythm and Blues', 'Convoy' and 'Dance with the Devil' all have their own unique charm and each shows off Alex's style to its best!

So, now I need to sign off and make sure everything is in place, yes - just one more check :-)

Tails of the Unexpected...

Here at The Acorn Gallery we are getting used to surprise visitors but it is still always a pleasure to meet and greet a new guest... and so to our latest visitor...

Paul James is over from Ireland and unexpectedly rang to ask if he could pop over and say hello - well naturally we said yes!!

Paul is famous for his almost photographic portrayal of the natural world, including stunning landscapes and true to life animal portraits, usually with a humourous twist!

Streetwise Charlie is one of his top-selling contemporary pieces and more work will follow in that same vein. We have been fortunate enough to reserve two stunning cow canvases named 'Little Madge' and 'Gorgeous George' which will hopefully be in the gallery soon.

Excitement!!!

Wow! March is here already and we are busy getting ready for Alexander Millars visit to the gallery on the 4th April 2009.

We have ordered in a selection of work which is now ready for framing. The window banner design is finished and ready for printing and we have also finalised the layout for the invitations. Watch out for yours landing on the doormat soon...

We are hoping in the next week to be offered some original pencil sketches and maybe even an original oil to compliment our selection of Limited Edition Prints.

On Friday I was up in Scotland delivering another original oil by Alexander Millar called 'Over The Moon'. Alex really seems to be flying at the moment!

It will compliment the 'Thats Our Boy' original that I took up in October 2008. When I saw it hanging there on the wall it made me smile.

So mark Saturday 4th April in your diary and we hope that you will be able to come along and chat to Alex about his work! Champagne and nibbles will be served and it should be a cracking day!!

Changeover Day!

We like to keep things looking fresh in The Acorn Gallery and today was Changeover Day! No - this doesn't mean that we got to the end of our holiday and went home - it means that we take down some pieces and put up some new work and generally have a change around!

We had a chat yesterday and wrote a plan - very organised for us - so that we knew which pieces were coming down and which were going up. It made things so much easier!

...and so it began... the original ribbons were lined up on the desk ready to adorn their next masterpiece, the ladders were brought downstairs ready to hang the higher pieces, and eventually the kettle went on too :-)

It didn't take long, about 3 hours in all, it went really smoothly - and according to plan too! (Good job we made that plan!).

The NEW Paul Kentons are the first to greet you as you walk in and they look simply stunning - especially 'City of Romance' with its gold highlights!

Caroline Shottons new piece 'It Must be Love' has been hung too along with her other latest releases, making for a very eyecatching panel!

We also have some beautiful original oils by Toni Hargreaves and these make a gorgeous display by the window wall!

An Unexpected Visitor!!

I was sitting in the gallery on Friday, busy updating the website when I received an unexpected visitor!! Bob Barker was in the area and couldn't resist popping in to say hello!

We spent the next two hours chatting about his new releases and his techniques. I asked Bob whether he would be happy to come along to the gallery and paint live for us - he said he would be delighted! I will approach Washington Green on Monday about getting him booked in - watch this space for more details - hopefully another champagne event for your diary...

The rest of Saturday was spent finalising the updating of the website with all the images from the ICC event - we are sooo excited about them and can't wait to take delivery!

The pieces that stand out the most (although it is VERY hard to choose!) are the new releases by Peter Smith, Alexander Millar, Caroline Shotton and Jeff Rowland - there are so many great pieces but I know you like me to name names :-)

ON the website homepage any artist whose name has NEW beside it means that they have NEW images released and you should check out their gallery - I would urge you to contact us as soon as possible if there is anything that takes your fancy as the images are strong and we are expecting some images to sell out quickly!

Whilst I write this I can now reveal the top seller for January. Our congratulations go to Alexander Millar. Well done Alex!! Yey!

One of the final pieces Govinder worked on before his death was a sculpture called 'Lean on Me'. This is a beautiful two-piece design and has been produced in stunning stainless steel! It is AMAZING!

It is sooo beautiful that they are having trouble photographing it as the curves and the steel reflect everything around - simply stunning and a VERY LOW EDITION so it is imperative if you want this piece to get in early - simply leave us a deposit to secure your sculpture!

As always the new releases will start to arrive in the gallery over the next few weeks so do pop in when you're passing to see what's new - don't be afraid to ask us - we are always happy to answer questions - or simply chat about the new work! A Strange Few Days!!

Over the weekend I decided to give another coat of oil to the gallery floor and with the help of my brother in law this was achieved! And if I say so myself I think we did a good job!!

Monday came and the gallery was closed as we were due to go to Birmingham to the ICC to view the new releases by this seasons top artists, including Peter Smith, Alexander Millar, Caroline Shotton, Paul Horton and Bob Barker to name but a few.

Unfortunately we awoke Monday morning to 4 inches of snow and warnings not to travel if your journey wasn't essential! Although the trip was important we weighed up the odds and having looked at all available forecasts Diane decided that our trip to the ICC could wait until Tuesday in the hope of better weather.

Instead I decided to open the gallery and turned up to find myself sticking to the floor which hadn't dried as well as expected due to the very low temperatures!

As the schools were also closed I spent Monday with Diane and the kids! (When I was at school we were there in all weathers and all temperatures - in fact the teachers would make every effort to get there just to make us work!!)

Anyway, Tuesday arrived and surprisingly we awoke to find that the snow had pretty much gone and so off we went to Birmingham, before the weather changed its mind!

We arrived in good time to find the ICC beautifully laid out with all the new work - wow it looked stunning! Usually the place is packed out with artists and fellow gallery owners, however many had not been able to make it or had left early due to the weather! This meant that we almost had the place to ourselves!!

The new work is fantastic (but then we would say that wouldn't we?) but we are sure that when you see it for yourselves you will be impressed! Images have not yet been released for the website to be updated but I am itching to get going with it and you will know as soon as I have done it!

If you are not sure if we have your email address for updates then do please send a quick message asking us to include you - we'd rather have you twice than not at all!

Anyway, today we opened up and found the floor had dried beautifully - it looks as good as new! The smell of oil still lingers a little but it's too cold to have the door open for long to clear it so I am feeling a little light headed!!

As I say it has been a stange few days!!

Oh What A Month!!

What a month! January blues have not surfaced this year and it has been a cracking month for sales. Many of you are finding the on-line ordering very useful so my thanks go to Jim for all his work on getting it up and running.

And so to February - with new Valentines releases due out soon there will be plenty to see and plenty of reasons for you to feel inspired to purchase a fabulous and unique gift for your loved one, whether it be your wife/husband, girlfriend/boyfriend or even for yourself!!

More and more people are coming to the conclusion that money looks much better on your wall in the form of a piece of art, rather than just as numbers on your bank statement!

This is borne out by the fact that we have sold work by 15 different artists this month - so far! The lead is currently held by Alexander Millar with Govinder Nazran coming a close second. The sad death of Govinder last month has left several of you looking for a souvenir of his work.

With the new season comes the Spring Fair which is the trade show where the we get to go and see the new images due to be released over the coming months. It is a great day out and a chance for us to chat with the artists and get first hand information as to their inspiration for painting a particular piece.

The gallery will therefore be closed on Monday 2nd Feburary but we are open as usual from 9.30am on Tuesday 3rd.

I promise to update you all with the new pieces and as soon as I have the images then the website will be updated too!
